THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST ENERGY EFFICIENT BUILDINGS IN THE SOUTHEAST. THIS BUILDING WAS JUDGED THE BEST COMMERCIAL BUILDING IN THE RESEARCH TRIANGLE AREA FOR "ENERGY CONSERVATION EXCELLENCE" BY THE AMERICAN SOLAR ENERGY SOCIETY, THE NC SOLAR ENERGY ASSOCIATION AND THE WAKE COUNTY ENERGY ADVISORY COMMISSION. 

 

THE LONG SOUTH-FACING ELEVATION HAS HORIZONTAL SUN SHADE/REFLECTORS IN THE DEEP WINDOW RECESSES.  THE TOP SURFACE OF THE SUN SHADE/REFLECTORS BOUNCE DAYLIGHT INTO THE OFFICES YEAR-ROUND FOR SOFT NATURAL DAYLIGHTING.  THE SUN SHADE/REFLECTORS ARE LOCATED AT THE SOLAR CUT-OFF ANGLE, SO THEY COMPLETELY SHADE THE GLASS FROM MARCH 21 THRU SEPTEMBER 21, IN ORDER TO REDUCE THE HEAT GAIN DURING THE AIR CONDITIONING SEASON.  FROM SEPTEMBER 21 UNTIL DECEMBER 21, AN INCREASING AMOUNT OF SUNLIGHT ENTERS THE BUILDING, AS IT GETS COLDER, AND THE SUN ANGLE GETS LOWER, GIVING PASSIVE HEAT GAIN DURING THE HEATING SEASON.  FROM DECEMBER 21 THRU MARCH 21, AS THE SUN ANGLE RISES AGAIN, THE AMOUNT OF SUN ENTERING THE BUILDING REDUCES BACK TO ZERO.  THE MOST SOLAR HEAT GAIN OCCURS IN THE COLDEST PART OF THE WINTER.

 

THE BUILDING IS SUPER INSULATED WITH R=33 WALLS AND R=47 ROOF.  THE HVAC SYSTEM ALLOWS.  ZONES ON THE NORTH SIDE TO HEAT, WHILE ZONES ON THE SOUTH SIDE CAN HEAT.
